LoveCha is a SF, woman owned, small business that specializes in DIY Boba Milk Tea kits and matcha/hojicha powders. I was given a sample of their milk tea kit and decided to try my hand at recreating one of my favorite milk tea variations, the ube milk tea!
The DIY Boba Milk Tea kit comes with instructions on how to assemble the milk teas and it’s meant to serve ~10 people. I was just making this boba for myself and my roommate so I decided to scale back the recipe a bit and came up the version down below, meant to serve 2 people at a time.

This ube milk tea is essentially just a black milk tea that’s topped with an ube milk foam. The foam itself turns the milk tea a beautiful shade of purple and adds a subtle hint of ube to the mix. The drink can easily be dressed up by adding a 1/4 of ube halaya as a topping, or just enjoyed as is!

Ingredients
Milk Tea (the recipe serves 2 cups of milk tea)
- 2 cup water
- 6 tbsp black tea
- 2/3 cup half and half
Syrup
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup water
Boba
- 4 cups water
- 1 cup boba
- 1/3 cup brown sugar
Ube Foam
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 tbsp ube extract
Instructions
Boba
- Start by boiling 4 cups of water
- Once the water is boiling, pour in the boba and stir continuously until the all the boba floats to the top
- Cover slightly with a lid (leaving just a small gap) and allow to cook for 45 minutes
- Once cooked, drain out the liquid and pour in the brown sugar and stir until it's all melted
- Cover the pot with a lid and allow the boba to soak in the brown sugar for at least 20 minutes
Milk Tea
- Boil 2 cups of water
- Remove the pot from the stove and pour in the tea leaves, stir gently
- Cover with a lid and allow the tea leaves to steep for 5 minutes
- Strain the tea leaves out and allow the tea to cool to room temperature
Ube Foam
- Pour the heavy cream and sugar into a bowl and, using a hand mixer, mix until medium peaks have formed
- Add in the milk and ube extract and continue to mix on medium speed for another 5 minutes until the milk and ube have fully incorporated and the foam is thick
Assembly
- Add ~1/4 cup boba to the bottom of the cup
- Add 2 tbsp of the syrup (sweetness can be adjusted to taste)
- Add ice to the glass
- Pour in 1 cup of the black tea
- Pour 1/3 cup of half and half on top
- Add 1/2 cup of the ube foam on top
- Stir and enjoy!
